So weird. Right after I posted my last journal I had this really big urge to draw. Then I met a sister in Sydney who also draws and since then I've been thinking about 1 Corinthians 10:23 "All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not."

I also had the urge to draw random things on the whiteboard, but stopped myself as they would not be edifying. Now I'm just wondering whether or not I want to let myself draw things that are lawful but not edifying.

[EDIT] 11 Feb 2012

Thought I should expand this a bit to be more clear. In the verse above Paul the Apostle of Jesus Christ is talking about how there are certain activities we do that do not exactly go against scripture, but they do not bring glory to God. (e.g it's lawful but not expedient/edifying to get drunk. Pretty much anything that brings you further from God)

Tying that to my drawings, for example, it would be lawful for me to draw what I've been drawing, but there is the question of whether the drawings bring glory to God.

On another note, there are some drawings such as scantily clad or sexy drawings, if you consider Matt 5:28 "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." Then those drawings are questionable. (In comparison, examples of non lawful drawings would be those that depict sin and encourage it or drawings of something that could lead to sin. e.g pornograpic drawings)

Then there's the fact that you need to draw things to practice. Although it doesn't bring glory per se, if we're doing it for the right purposes and commit it to Him then it can be glorifying.

Hope that helps.

In Christ.

My purpose

1 min read
I will no longer draw for myself. I will no longer draw for others. I will no longer draw for praise or glory. I will no longer let my pride guide my drawing.

Until I can glorify God with my drawing, I will no longer draw.

Everytime I draw I will commit it to Him.

I will wait for his will. If it is his will for me to use this skill that he has blessed me with to advance his kingdom, then I shall.

Until then, everyone, peace to you all and God bless!

Portraits

Hi Everyone.

Recently something has happened that got me thinking.

It was at a freind's birthday party at a restaurant where the table cloth was like paper and you can draw on it. Even though I was telling myself not to draw in the end I did and for some reason I was ashamed of my drawing. I couldn't understand why at the time, but I felt like absolute shit.
But now I think I know the answer. Despite how much I tell myself that I'm not affected, the real truth is that my pride actually does get hurt. It's not too bad when you're learning since the person who's critiquing you is someone you acknowlede is better than you and that you need to swollow your pride to get better. But when it's the audience... that's when the pride really takes a beating.
The funny thing is that my "audience" didn't even say it was bad, on the contrary they said it was good, but it didn't look like the person I was drawing and that it looked "manga style". I seem to have some sort of problem of being ashamed of drawing anime/manga style especially in front of the non-manga/anime audience.

Anyway, this has gotten me to thinking. And one thing that held be back in learning how to draw was drawing bodies and posing and everything else that came with it. I never got used to drawing bodies no matter how much better I got with doing it. So I thought, maybe I should learn how to draw portraits. It's what I'm comfortable with (drawing faces/heads), and can be useful in a social setting.

So after my upcoming exam I think I shall get back into drawing and learn to improve my skills in portrait drawing. However, I don't want to throw my manga/anime drawing backgroud into the trash, so I would like to learn how to draw an anime style portrait of someone, as well as learning how to draw a more realistic protrait.

Wish me luck!

P.S. If you haven't watched One Piece yet, start watching it. I'm up to Ep 516 and it's epic. The one anime that is worth watching the whole way through. You might say "500+ episodes? That's way too long", but once you start and give it a go you'll be hooked and you can thank me for it later =)

Alice in Wakfu

7 min read
Hi Everyone. I have been wafting in and out of the urge to draw amongst playing that mmo called Real Life. I have recently resigned from my job to take a break and to look for other opportunities. However since then I still haven't come back to the drawing scene.
I havne't been posting much since I usually tried to stick to only posting drawing related journals of my adventures of being a casual artist or things that inspire me. I have yet to drop the mouse and pick up the tablet pen so to speak. As such I will now add journals to anything that has inspired me to want to draw again as well (maybe it will help me to do so).

-Wakfu-
I've been watching a french animated series called Wakfu. It's based on an mmo I used to play a long time ago. Everything about it is excellent and a joy to watch. Good visuals, animation and music. It has a good mix of action and adventure. To me it's also a welcome change to listen to french instead of japanese.
It's amazing, the imagination of the creators of the multi platform franchise. With a cheerful and bright setting of cartoonish 2D, it's surely something different to the normal realistic 3D kind of mmos nowadays, and it shows in the cartoon. This is one of draws that have moved me to want to draw again.

-Alice-
Now to change the atmosphere, more recently I have just finished playing a rather old game.
While surfing the net, I came across a game that I saw in stores quite a while ago which intrigued me but I had never pursued it. It was American McGee's Alice, released in 2000. The dark atmosphere of this take on the Alice in Wonderland story drew me then and has drawn me now to finally play it.
I was amazed.
The music and atmosphere of the game is chilling and dark. As I navigated through the horror, sometimes I would even have chills down my spine. I thouroughly enjoyed it.
The best part is that the makers have recently released the sequel and from what I've seen from the trailers, it will deliver www.youtube.com/watch?v=VR8wXs… . Due to RL I have controlled myself not to purchase the game as of yet, but I eagerly await in anticipation to play it and perhaps draw something from the inspiration.

On another note, to the Yume Nikki fans - crossovers are made of win. imageshack.us/f/576/5abe94171b…
It's amazing how both have so much in common, and the atmosphere of both are alike.

Apologies for the misleading title.  =P

TL: DR - Watch Wakfu. Play American McGee's Alice and it's sequel Alice: Madness Returns. Click link. Draw.

[EDIT] The voice acting of Alice and the Cheshire Cat was excellent as well. I loved Alice's Brittish accent and demeanor and the cat's low and mysteriously dark voice.
